Common carp
Cyprinus carpio
Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is a freshwater fish found in UK waters. Still and slow waters — lakes, gravel pits, canals and the lower reaches of rivers. Holds near features: overhanging trees, lily beds, gravel bars and margins. Whether you can keep one depends on local rules — check before you do.

What it looks like
Heavy and deep-bodied, covered in even bronze-gold scales, with a thick shoulder and a large fan of a tail. The mouth points down and is rubbery and extendable, built for hoovering food off the bottom. Four barbules hang around it — two long at the corners, two short on the upper lip.
Older fish darken and thicken. A twenty-year-old carp from a clear gravel pit can look almost black across the back with deep brass flanks, while a young fish from a coloured lake is paler and more olive.
How to catch one
Bait
Boilies, sweetcorn, bread and pellet. Sweetcorn on a size 10 hook is enough to start.
Rig
A simple running lead with a 6–8 inch braided hooklink, or a float rig fished in the margins.
When
First and last light. Warm, overcast days with a light southwesterly are reliable.
Where
Look for bubbling, clouded water and moving reeds before you cast — carp show you where they are.
Season: Feeds all year but best from late spring to early autumn, once the water is above about 12°C.
Easy to confuse with
Mirror carp
Mirror carp have large irregular scales in patches; common carp are evenly covered in small scales.
crucian carp
Crucians are much smaller, deeper-bodied, and have no barbules at the mouth.

- Can you eat common carp in the UK?
- Legally you may on some waters, but nearly all UK carp fisheries are catch-and-release and removing fish breaks their rules. Check the fishery's rule board before you keep anything.
- What is the best bait for common carp?
- Sweetcorn and boilies are the two most reliable. Sweetcorn is cheap, visible and works from the first session; boilies select for bigger fish because small species struggle to take them.
- How big do common carp get in the UK?
- Doubles (over 10 lb / 4.5 kg) are common in stocked waters. A first carp of 2–5 kg is a realistic target.
